The town/city was the principal recording locale for the 1967 film In the Heat of the Night. Sparta is positioned at 38 8 N 89 42 W (38.1282, -89.7061). According to the 2010 census, Sparta has a total region of 11.443 square miles (29.64 km2), of which 11.17 square miles (28.93 km2) (or 97.61%) is territory and 0.273 square miles (0.71 km2) (or 2.39%) is water. After World War II, Sparta became known as "Magazineland, U.S.A." The town/city and state governments had lobbied difficult for the move to Sparta, which was necessitated by the expansion of the Dayton International Airport in Vandalia.

In 2006, then Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich and small-town dignitaries opened the World Shooting and Recreational Complex north of Sparta.

In 2012 the ATA moved their nationwide headquarters to 1105 East Broadway, Sparta Illinois.

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 81.39% White, 15.65% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.27% from other competitions, and 1.83% from two or more competitions.

There were 1,783 homeholds out of which 30.8% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 47.9% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families.

In the city, the populace was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a homehold in the town/city was $34,139, and the median income for a family was $41,908.

About 10.9% of families and 16.0% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 27.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
