It is part of the Rockford, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area, but it is essentially a suburban extension of Beloit, WI, which is directly along the city's northern border.
At the 2010 census, the city's populace was 7,892, up from 5,297 in 2000.
South Beloit is positioned at 42 29 03 N 89 02 19 W (42.484228, -89.038586). According to the 2010 census, South Beloit has a total region of 6.13 square miles (15.88 km2), of which 5.9 square miles (15.28 km2) (or 96.25%) is territory and 0.23 square miles (0.60 km2) (or 3.75%) is water. In the city, the populace was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older.
