The town/city is positioned on the Rock River, directly opposite Sterling.

Rock Falls is separated from its sister city, Sterling, to the North by the Rock River.

According to the 2010 census, Rock Falls has a total region of 3.795 square miles (9.83 km2), of which 3.66 square miles (9.48 km2) (or 96.44%) is territory and 0.135 square miles (0.35 km2) (or 3.56%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 9,580 citizens , 3,895 homeholds, and 2,559 families residing in the city.
