Lansing is a southern suburb of Chicago.

Lansing is positioned at 41 33 57 N 87 32 45 W (41.565785, -87.545791). It is 6.9 miles (11.1 km) south of the Chicago town/city limits at 138th Street, and 25.6 miles (41.2 km) from the Chicago Loop.

Lansing is bordered by Glenwood and Thornton to the west, Calumet City and South Holland to the north, Lynwood to the south, and by Munster and Hammond in Indiana to the east.

According to the 2010 census, Lansing has a total region of 6.848 square miles (17.74 km2), of which 6.79 square miles (17.59 km2) (or 99.15%) is territory and 0.058 square miles (0.15 km2) (or 0.85%) is water. Lansing sits on the Calumet Shoreline, an ancient shoreline of Lake Michigan.

Lansing is in Illinois' 2nd congressional district.

The first family to settle in Lansing was that of August Hildebrandt in 1843.

Henry, George, and John Lansing settled the region in 1846, which was incorporated in 1893.

These settlement patterns are reflected in Lansing's current demographics; as stated to the census of 2000, the top five non black ancestries in Lansing were German (17%), Polish (13%), Irish (13%), Dutch (11%), and Italian (7%).

The ethnic makeup of the village was 58.93% White, 31.59% African American, 0.02% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 6.11% from other competitions, and 2.18% from two or more competitions.

There were 11,416 homeholds out of which 30.3% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 31.9% were non-families.

In the village, the populace was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
