The populace was 3,281 at the 2010 census. It is the governmental center of county of Clinton County. Carlyle is positioned approximately 50 miles (80 km) east of St.

Louis, Missouri, and is home to Illinois' biggest man-made lake, Carlyle Lake, and to the General Dean Suspension Bridge, a suspension bridge that is the only one of its kind in Illinois and crosses the Kaskaskia River.

John Hill assembled the first home to be positioned in what has turn into Carlyle.

According to the 2010 census, Carlyle has a total region of 3.371 square miles (8.73 km2), of which 3.37 square miles (8.73 km2) (or 99.97%) is territory and 0.001 square miles (0.00 km2) (or 0.03%) is water. In the city, the populace was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who were 65 years of age or older.
